Department VI: Resaerch activities

In addition to health care activities, the Department is involved in intensive scientific research activities both in the filed of clinical studies of certain specific aspects of patients suffering from epilepsy (association with multiple sclerosis, extensive investigation of status epilepticus as well as short and long-term follow-up of survivors after status epilepticus) and specific aspects of patients suffering from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (investigation of the clinical, psychological. i.e., psychiatric profile of these patients).

During the last several years, the greatest research efforts have been made in the field of  genetic background of epilepsy, neuropsychological nosology in epileptic patients and identification of the cognitive profile caused by administration of some antiepileptics  and correlation of certain neuroradiological methods (magnetic spectroscopy) with routine diagnostic procedures in patients affected with generalized or focal epilepsies.

A part of the research activities carried out at the Department VI is performed in coordination with the European research centers, particularly those in Bon (Germany), Innsbruck (Austria) and Catanzaro (Italy). Researchers from the Department for epilepsies participated in a multicenter study aimed at investigation of the new onset seizures (MESS study) and determination of teratogenicity of antiepileptics within a prospective European study (EURAP).

Physicians from the Department of Epilepsy are also members of Cochrane Collaboration volunteer organization  that publishes in systematic review articles Cochrane Library, i.e., meta-analyses of the effects of interventions tested in randomized controlled and observational uncontrolled studies.
