Academician Professor Dr Vladimir S. Kostić (1953),a full professor of neurology at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade, a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a director of the Institute of Neurology, Clinical Center of Serbia, focuses his professional and research interest on degenerative CNS diseases, before all etiopathogenesis and treatment. He graduated from the School of Medicine in 1978. He passed Board Examination in May 1985. He completed his postgraduate studies at the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Belgrade (majoring in Neurobiology) in 1980 upon defending his master’s thesis under the title “In vitro study of energetic condition of brain capillaries.” He defended doctoral thesis “The study of prostaglandin metabolism in brain ischemia” at the School of Medicine, Belgrade, in 1986.
During his advanced training and academic career, he spent in Middlesex Hospital in London two months in 1987, and as Fulbright Foundation fellow and 15-month visiting professor (1989/1990) in the Institute of Neurology, Columbia University (New York), and finally, as visiting research scientist in the same institution over additional 13 months (1995/1996). On two occasions, he was awarded Belgrade October Prize for scientific contribution in the field of medicine, in 1988 and 1994. Moreover, he won Annual Award of the Serbian Medical Society for science in 1997. He is an author and coauthor of 6 books and textbooks, and editor of 13 monographs. He is a coauthor of more than 120 original research papers published in extenso in the international journals (quoted over 2000 times by SCI), as well as 12 chapters in the international books and monographs. He has been and still is a principle investigator of multiple national and international projects. Professor V. Kostić is a member of numerous national and international professional and scientific societies.
